Scholarship Description: A 3 year British Lung Foundation PhD studentship is available to work with Dr Stefan Marciniak in the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research October 2011. Malignant mesothelioma is an incurable cancer caused by asbestos exposure. We have observed elevated endoplasmic reticulum stress in human malignant mesothelioma tissue. We hypothesize that this affects tumour growth and survival and thus represents a potential drug target. The aim of this PhD project is to determine the effect of endoplasmic reticulum stress on malignant mesothelioma growth in vitro in order to identify potential therapeutic targets. The student will be trained in a variety of cell biological and biochemical techniques with wide applicability to life sciences research.

Scholarship Description: The Neuronal Oscillation group and the MR Techniques in Brain Function group at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging, have funding available for a PhD position, aimed at quantitative evaluation of neuroimaging signal characteristics resulting from activity of neurons in the working human brain. The human brain is composed of multiple regions that are flexibly engaged and disengaged depending on the cognitive task performed. Each of these regions comprises large numbers of neurons that interact non-linearly. A fundamental question in cognitive neuroscience is how the connections and interactions of the neurons shape the functional architecture of the working brain. At the Donders Institute this question is addressed experimentally by measuring cognitive signals by means of magneto-encephalography (MEG), electro-encephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).

Our laboratory investigates somite development using the chicken embryo as a model system, and applies modern embryological techniques including microsurgery, in vivo electroporation and retroviral gene transfer to study cellular and molecular mechanisms during early and intermediate stages of muscle development. Scholarship Description: Small angle neutron scattering (SANS) has become a major component of structural biology at the ILL to study interactions and low resolution structures in large biological macromolecular complexes. Furthermore the PSB (Partnership for Structural Biology) provides additional outstanding facilities for structural biology, including a Deuteration Laboratory for isotope labeling of biological molecules, and a wide variety of complementary biophysical methods. With the presence of the European Molecular Biology Laboratory, the Institute of Structural Biology and the European Synchrotron Radiation Facility, the campus provides an exciting research environment for biology. The ILL is inviting applications for a scientist to take charge of the biological aspects of the SANS instrument D22 in the Large Scale Structures group. Duties would include: instrument maintenance and development, running data collection and analysis software, local contact for biology experiments both on D22 and on the other SANS instruments of the group, and to coordinate the system of beamtime block allocation to experimenters. Scholarship Description: In oncology, after curative treatment for cancer, patients enter into a surveillance phase and are followed in a regular manner in order to detect relapses. For some cancer sites, many patients will relapse early and others will never relapse. However, most visits are planned irrespective of prognosis. Recently, we proposed a statistical method founded on an adaptation of the schedule of follow-up visits based on the dynamic process of the first event type: loco-regional relapse, metastases, or second cancer according to prognostic factors (Ataman 2006, Filleron 2009).

The main objective of this project is to develop statistical methodology which can allow the planning of follow-up visits in an optimal way based on a competing risks model (Fine and Gray 1998) with a component for cure (Jeong 2006), which takes account of the first event type and prognostic factors associated with the different event types. The model parameters can then be used to estimate event-specific cumulative incidences functions, whose quantiles can be used to plan visits around the time points where the events are most likely to occur.

The aim of this modelling approach is to propose a lighter follow-up schedule for patients at very low risk of relapse and thus optimise resources in terms of the number of consultations and visits in the long term.
