Scholarship Description: Our group consists of an interdisciplinary team with expertise in biology, biochemistry, bioinformatics and medicine.Therefore we provide an excellent working environment, comprising many lab-specific datasets for analysis and the possibility to participate in the design of future experiments. We study the molecular mechanism underlying the cardiac developmental process and its aberration in human (congenital heart disease). A particular focus is on the process of gene transcription, its regulation and phenotypic consequence. The heart, cardiac and skeletal muscle cells represent our model systems employing animal models, patient material and cell culture.

The three-year studentship is available as part of an ERC funded project entitled, An inter-disciplinary approach for identifying evolutionary active regions in the human genome. The project involves research on the variation of human genome in populations from various climate zones. It will combine evidence from Humanities and Natural Sciences to build realistic demographic models of population differentiation and dispersals over the past 100 thousand years and using high-throughput genotyping and second generation sequencing methods will attempt to reveal regions in the genome that have been affected by natural selection due to environment and life style differences.

Scholarship Description: Applications are invited to pursue PhD research in close colloboration with a major research programme on the Long Term Dynamics of Interdependent Infrastructure Systems being undertaken by the UK Infrastructure Transitions research Consortium (IRTC) funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC). The aim of the ITRC is to develop and demonstrate a new generation of system simulation models and tools to inform analysis, planning and design of national infrastructure. The programme has high level backing from a range of stakeholders in government and industry. The focus of the PhD Studentship is to use new economic concepts derived from evolutionary economics to understand more about the inter-relationships between different levels of infrastructure provision and the longer term development of local economies. In particular, the research will focus on how the long-run evolution of infrastructure then shapes and reshapes the geography of economic development. The work will be supervised by Professor Peter Tyler (Department of Land Economy, University of Cambridge) and Professor Ron Martin (Department of Geography, University of Cambridge).

Scholarship Description: A 3 year British Lung Foundation PhD studentship is available to work with Dr Stefan Marciniak in the Cambridge Institute for Medical Research October 2011. Malignant mesothelioma is an incurable cancer caused by asbestos exposure. We have observed elevated endoplasmic reticulum stress in human malignant mesothelioma tissue. We hypothesize that this affects tumour growth and survival and thus represents a potential drug target. The aim of this PhD project is to determine the effect of endoplasmic reticulum stress on malignant mesothelioma growth in vitro in order to identify potential therapeutic targets. The student will be trained in a variety of cell biological and biochemical techniques with wide applicability to life sciences research.

Scholarship Description: We are looking for a highly motivated student to start a PhD research project focusing on the interactions of apoptotic, necrotic and autophagic cells with the innate and adaptive immune systems. This project seeks to identify new immunomodulatory Damage-Associated Molecular Patterns (DAMPs) that are either exposed on the cell surface or released into the extracellular environment. Identification of immunostimulatory substances might lead to the development of anti-cancer vaccines in the future. You will be working in a subgroup together with one other PhD student, one technician, and one senior postdoc in the Molecular Signalling and Cell Death Unit . The work will involve making use of cutting edge methods, including recombinant DNA technology, cell culture, transfection of cells, analysis of gene and protein expression, anti-tumor vaccination, use of transgenic and knockout mice, flow cytometry, in vitro phagocytosis assay, and chemotaxis assays. The research unit consists of more than 30 enthusiastic people working in the field of cell death and inflammation.
