Scholarship Description: The Neuronal Oscillation group and the MR Techniques in Brain Function group at the Donders Institute for Brain, Cognition and Behaviour, Centre for Cognitive Neuroimaging, have funding available for a PhD position, aimed at quantitative evaluation of neuroimaging signal characteristics resulting from activity of neurons in the working human brain. The human brain is composed of multiple regions that are flexibly engaged and disengaged depending on the cognitive task performed. Each of these regions comprises large numbers of neurons that interact non-linearly. A fundamental question in cognitive neuroscience is how the connections and interactions of the neurons shape the functional architecture of the working brain. At the Donders Institute this question is addressed experimentally by measuring cognitive signals by means of magneto-encephalography (MEG), electro-encephalography (EEG) and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).

University of Amsterdam announce PhD Position in Molecular Machines at Work in the Gas Phase, Netherlands

Study Subject(s): Molecular Machines at Work in the Gas Phase
Course Level:PhD
Scholarship Provider: University of Amsterdam, Netherlands
Scholarship can be taken at: Netherlands

Eligibility:
A Master’s/academic degree in (Physical) Chemistry or (Experimental) Physics. The candidate should have proven laboratory skills and an affinity for working with advanced technical equipment. Experience with (laser) spectroscopic methods is an advantage.

Scholarship Open for International Students: No

Scholarship Description: Inspired by nature, scientists nowadays try to make molecules that are able to perform the same functions as macroscopic machines. To understand the ‘instruction manual’ of machines on a molecular scale, one needs to study the externally controlled operation of synthetic molecular machines under isolated conditions and under conditions that mimic their operational environment. The fundamental underlying mechanisms of such machines – and in particular the detailed conformational changes that are key to these motions – are studied ideally under conditions in which one can zoom in on their intrinsic structural properties and inter-component interactions, and at the same time control the interactions with their surroundings. As we have shown, high-resolution spectroscopy on jet-cooled, isolated molecular machines and on clusters with solvent molecules is the most direct approach to achieve this level of detail.
